Summary Minutes: Regular City Commission Meeting

July 19,2007

City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida

Police Chief Fred Maas said that last week they had a situation where an officer went to stop
a vehicle but prior to stopping it he ran the tag on the computer and within 5 seconds the
information came back that it was a stolen vehicle, and it had been taken in a carjacking in
Miami Beach, and so the officer knew prior to stopping that vehicle what he was facing.
Prior to activating his lights, he notified the other officers and they started moving toward his
direction as a safety precaution, and when he went to stop the vehicle, the driver bailed out of
the car and ran westbound at 158th & Collins, meanwhile the other officers already moved
into position, and took him into custody without incident. This is a tremendous system,
primarily for the safety of officers giving them a heads-up of what they are facing.

Chief Maas stated that the team worked hard on this program, and the Department started
saving from the first day of inception as a Police Department, saving asset forfeiture funds to
pay for this program. Chief Maas thanked the Commission, and stated that it was done
without any cost to the taxpayers. ChiefMaas and City Manager Szerlag presented plaques
to Information Technology Director Derrick Arias on behalf ofthe IT Department including
Kamran Sadighi, Edel Fonseca, and Humberto Martinez; Francis Sands, of the Police
Department; Kamran Sadighi as Project Manager; and Captain Michael Grandinetti who
managed the financial side dealing with the vendors.

Mayor Edelcup thanked Chief Maas and the team on behalf of the Commission.

12C. Add-On Item:
Information Technology Director Derrick Arias.
Action: City Manager Szerlag announced that Information Technology Director Derrick
Arias will be leaving us as he has another position closer to his home. He said he has always
found Mr. Arias to be the consummate professional, his department was always run very
smoothly and he is going to be greatly missed. He said he is always in favor of having
someone to be able to advance their career and that is happening here. Commissioner Brezin
asked when he is leaving and Mr. Arias said Friday, July 27, 2007. The Commission wished
him luck.

13.
