City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
Marine and Coastal Professional Engineering Consulting Services (CCNA) | RFQ No. 18‐02‐01

Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc.
37
01C032018D

Before and after the dune repair project at Seagrape Beach (2014 and 2015).
OTHER NOTABLE EFFORTS FOR THE COUNTY:
• Beach Preservation Plan (BPP)
In 2015, APTIM developed an update to the County’s BPP, first adopted in 1988. The BPP details the County’s strategies
for the management and the long‐term sustainability of its coastline. The purpose of this update was to reevaluate the
condition of the County’s coastline and identify cost effective alternatives to maintain and improve its sustainability. To
accomplish this, the following goals were established: 1) avoid adverse impacts to environmental resources including
nearshore hardbottom, 2) assess the vulnerability of upland property up to a 30‐year storm event, 3) quantify the
damages due to shoreline retreat over the next 30 years, and 4) determine the recreational value of the beaches. To
address these goals, APTIM completed several tasks, including updating the beach conditions by evaluating shoreline and
volumetric change data and performing erosion and storm impact analyses. We also held public meetings to explain the
objectives of the update to the BPP and to solicit public input into potential beach management strategies. Management
strategies were developed and analyzed to identify cost effective alternatives to maintain and improve the sustainability
of the County’s beaches. Additionally, APTIM identified potential funding sources and mechanisms to fund these
strategies, for the County’s consideration.
• Post‐Hurricane Matthew FEMA Assistance
APTIM developed storm impact analysis reports for the efforts of securing FEMA Public Assistance disaster relief funding
for the Sector 3 project, as well as the 2.6 miles of Sector 5 and the 2.1 miles of Sector 7. We continue to support the
County with FEMA coordination, as needed.
• Sector 5 Beach Restoration Design and Permitting
APTIM is currently performing design and permitting services for the proposed Sector 5 Beach Restoration Project in the
City of Vero Beach (R‐70 to R‐86). APTIM has developed a project feasibility study and preliminary design for the
~200,000 cy project. We are currently coordinating with State and Federal permit agencies in an effort to obtain
environmental permits for the project.
25.
