City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
Marine and Coastal Professional Engineering Consulting Services (CCNA) | RFQ No. 18‐02‐01

Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc.
43
01C032018D

Lido Key Beach Nourishment Program
CITY OF SARASOTA, FLORIDA
Program Description:
Since 1989, APTIM has provided a full range of coastal engineering,
permitting, coastal modeling, beach and coastal structures design,
funding acquisition, geotechnical, environmental and surveying
services to the City of Sarasota resulting in the construction of five
beach renourishment projects (1998, 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2015)
on Lido Key, Florida. The City’s beach preservation program has
been highly successful in restoring and maintaining the popular
recreational beach of Lido Key and in providing storm protection to
the beach road (Ben Franklin Drive) and to upland buildings. The
project won the ASBPA National Best Restored Beach Award for
2009.
Post‐Disaster Projects
In 2009 and 2015, Lido Key Beach Renourishment Projects were
constructed as FEMA funded projects since they repaired storm
damages to a previously engineered (non‐federal) beach
nourishment project. APTIM prepared a storm loss analysis in
order for the City to obtain FEMA funding associated with the
storm damages to the beach. APTIM assisted the City in applying
for time extensions and minor modification to the existing FDEP
and USACE permits, which allowed the project to be constructed
with the existing permits. We also provided the City with oversight
and support during construction and assistance with the post‐
construction monitoring and reporting. An inlet management study
developed by our firm allowed for the use of New Pass ebb shoal
as the sediment source. APTIM conducted Delft3D numerical
modeling to determine the coastal effects of excavating sediment
from New Pass. APTIM is currently preparing a storm loss analysis
in order for the City to obtain FEMA funding associated with the
storm damages from Hurricane Hermine.
APTIM has also provided in‐kind services for the Corps’
effort to re‐establish Lido Key as a federal project and to
develop a federally‐authorized and funded shore
protection project. The proposed project includes fill
placement and coastal structures. We are currently
assisting the City with the permitting and coordination to
obtain the FDEP permit for the project. The project will
renourish Lido Key with Big Sarasota Pass as the proposed
borrow source, and places two groins at the south end of
the island.
Lido Key Hurricane & Storm Damage Reduction Project (2015).

Client
City of Sarasota
Prime
APTIM Environmental &
Infrastructure, Inc.
Client Contact
Alexandrea DavisShaw, City Engineer
Neighborhood & Development
Services
City of Sarasota
1565 First St, Rm 100A
Sarasota, FL 34230
P: (941) 365‐2200 ext. 4181
F: (941) 954‐4174
Alexandrea.Davis‐
Shaw@sarasotaFL.gov
Project Dates
Start: 1988 End: Ongoing
APTIM Staff
Tom Pierro – director and senior
coastal engineer
Michelle Pfeiffer – project manager
and engineer of record
Will Reilly – post‐storm coastal
engineering assistance
Lauren Floyd – lead senior marine
biologist, permitting and NEPA lead
Stacy Buck – senior marine biologist
Kathryn Brown – marine biologist
Beth Forrest – geologist
Beau Suthard – geologist
