April 24,2007,which Reads in Part; "To Promote Public Awareness as a Source of History and
Heritage in the City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida";Agreeing to and Authorizing the Production
of a Historical Film of the 88-Year History of the City of Sunny Isles/Sunny Isles Beach,
Florida; Providing for an Effective Date.
Action: Chairperson Masters read the Resolution into the record. City Historian Richard C.
Schulman introduced Seth Bramson, author of"From Sandbar to Sophistication, the History of
Sunny Isles Beach".
Mr. Bramson announced that if you are 60 years or older and go to the Registrar's Office at both
campuses of Florida International University (FIU) and you present your State ID or Driver's
License you can audit any undergraduate course at the University for free. He will be teaching
AMH 4914 South Florida History Research for the summer at FIU which starts May 6, and
among the tropics covered is the great history of this City starting with Harvey Baker Graves.
Mr. Branson reported that we are going to produce an historical film which will be 22 minutes in
length so if at such time it is shown on television, it will allow time for either promotionals or
commercials. He has spent a great deal of time with Mayor Edelcup:and City Historian
Schulman going through the book and choosing photographs that will be the background for the
discussion that will be going on in the film, which will be covering the history of the City
beginning with Harvey Baker Graves arrival to the present. It will be a marvelous selling piece
and promotional for this great City.
City Historian Schulman said once the film is completed which could take from six months to a
year, will be shown on Channel 77, and quite possibly in other parts of the country. There will
be a cost in doing this film, such as for lighting, voice-over by Mr. Bramson, etc. there will be
music, and an introduction at the beginning of the film by Mayor Edelcup, and possibly the finish
of the film may be in front of the World Globe at Trump International. Mr. Bramson said he
does not charge the City for the use of his photographs which saves the City thousands of dollars.
Cassey Gabor emphasized the importance of the music, and noted that she has a film that was
done on the History of Miami with very good background music and she will bring it in and
perhaps we can get some ideas.
Assistant City Attorney Fernando Amuchastegui said that this Resolution will show the Board's
support in the production of a historical film of the history of the City.
Cassey Gabor moved and Trina Duluc seconded a motion to approve the Resolution
supporting the City's Efforts to produce an historical film of the City's history. HPB
Resolution No.2008-09 was adopted by a voice vote of 6-0-1 (Bonita Shoki absent)in favor.
6. Report of Memorabilia Donated by Rascal House on March 20, 2008.
Action: City Historian Schulman reported on the memorabilia donated by the Rascal House
upon their closing. On March 31, 2008, he went with Mayor Edelcup liand Administrative
Services Director Alyce Hanson to the Rascal House to get memorabilia donated to the City by
Isaac Starkman's family, including three tables that are now in our break room here on the 4th
floor,as well as a large seating arrangement, and he showed a picture of the Rascal House which
will go into History Hall.
