The City's beaches were closed five days in 2009 due to high levels of bacteria in
the water. This area of water was limited to the Pier Park area, not the entire two-mile
expanse ofthe beach. It was discussed that debris from the closed Pier may be affecting the
water testing site. City Officials met with Miami-Dade County Health Department Officials
and discussed moving the water testing site. The new site will be on 17ih Street and Collins
A venue. Trina Duluc provided informational material on sonar equipment that can be used
on parts of the Pier to keep the pelicans and other birds away from it. The Project
Management Team building the Pier will review the information to see if it may be
incorporated into the new Pier structure. The Committee also discussed the recent coastal
clean-ups of the beach this year. The last beach clean up included 62 participants and was
part of the Miami-Dade Coastal Clean Up Project.
