3.03 PREPARATION <br />A. Pits and Trenches: <br />1. Shape: <br />a. Vertical sides and flat bottom. <br />b. Plant pits to be square or circular. <br />2. Size: <br />a. For Trees: <br />(1) Depth: Minimum 2 ft. from finish grade and increased <br />as necessary to accommodate planting ball and at <br />least 6 inch planting soil backfill below ball or roots. <br />(2) Width or Diameter: 2 ft. greater than diameter of <br />plating ball (unless otherwise approved by Landscape <br />Architect for special planting areas. <br />b. For Shrubs and Groundcovers: <br />(1) Depth: <br />(a) 2- and 3- gallon plant material shall receive a <br />minimum of 2" of planting soil mixture beneath <br />the root ball. <br />(b) Plant materials sized 1 gallon or less, or <br />materials planted 24 inches O.C. or less shall <br />receive a full 12 inches of amended planting <br />soil mix tilled to a minimum depth of 12 inches. <br />NOTE: All annuals beds shall receive a full 6 <br />inches of amended planting soil mix tilled to a <br />minimum depth of 6 inches. <br />(c) For plants not requiring soil mix the entire bed <br />shall be tilled by mechanical means to a depth <br />of 12 inches. <br />(2) Width or Diameter: <br />(a) All 2- or 3- gallon material shall be placed within <br />a minimum 13 -1/2 inch planting hole, and <br />backfilled with the specified planting soil mix. <br />(b) All plant material sized 1 gallon or less, or <br />material planted 24 inches O.C. or less shall <br />receive complete bed amending.
