City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
Marine and Coastal Professional Engineering Consulting Services (CCNA) | RFQ No. 18‐02‐01

Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc.
39
01C032018D

Coquina Beach (2015).
APTIM provided geotechnical services to identify the sand source, the engineering services, State and FEMA funding
acquisition assistance, permitting services, extensive environmental services, technical consultation and construction
oversight services to help restore this portion of the island’s receding coastline.
APTIM also developed and acquired permits for a seven‐mile‐long underwater pipeline corridor which allowed the
dredging contractor to use the same equipment to deliver sand to both ends of the island. The use of an underwater
pipeline to place sand in Coquina Beach avoided pipeline placement on the beach over almost the entire length of Anna
Maria Island.
APTIM also designed and constructed an approximate 5‐acre mitigative artificial reef approximately 1,100 feet off the
coast of Coquina Beach. APTIM staff worked aggressively on the County's behalf to limit the amount of required artificial
reef as replacement for burial of nearshore hardbottom by the beach nourishment project, again saving Manatee County
construction funds.
OTHER NOTABLE EFFORTS FOR THE COUNTY:
• Federal Coordination and Funding in the City of Anna Maria Island
APTIM assisted Manatee County with proceeding under the authority of Section 206 as the non‐federal sponsor of
construct the federally authorized Central Beach nourishment project. Section 206 allowed Manatee County to engineer
and construct the project, control the design and schedule and reduce engineering and construction costs. APTIM
adapted the construction project to include a 0.6‐mile coastal segment in the City of Anna Maria, which is not part of the
Federal project.
• Emergency Response
We have assisted the Manatee County in securing funds and construction assistance for multiple storm repair projects:
2005 and 2011 projects in response to hurricane activity in 2004 (H. Charlie/Ivan), 2014 project in response to T.S.
Debby, and currently working with the County to obtain FEMA funding associated with the storm damages from
Hurricane Hermine and Hurricane Irma.
• Coastal Structure Removal & Replacement
APTIM is assisting the County with the Cortez Groins Removal and Replacement project, which includes the demolition of
three dilapidated pier‐type structures and replacement with new permeable adjustable groins in order maintain the
stabilization of the shoreline that fronts the island’s evacuation route.
25.
